Personal Needs

When you are preparing for admittance to UMMC, you may wish to pack and bring the following: nightwear, (you will be given a hospital gown but some people prefer to bring their own), robe, rubber-soled slippers, warm socks, and personal toiletries (makeup, lotion, comb, razor, toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, etc). It is also wise to include reading materials, address book, and a small amount of money. If you are packing for a child, you may wish to include a special toy, clearly labeled with your child's name.

Towels and washcloths will be provided by the hospital. All electric appliances (hair dryers, heating pads, cellular phones, radios, etc) must be checked by our BioMed department for your and the hospital's safety. Please notify your nurse if you have brought any of these items with you.If you wear eyeglasses, contact lenses or dentures, please bring your own protective containers for those items. If you should happen to lose any of your personal items while at the hospital, please alert your nurse or call the operator to report any losses to security.

We highly recommend you leave your valuables at home. If you happen to have any valuables upon arrival, you can request to secure them in a security safe 24 hours per day.You can request, your valuables upon discharge.

When you are admitted to the hospital, you will have an identification bracelet place on your wrist. This bracelet identifies you to all that care for you and is used for conveying important medical information. It is imperative you wear the bracelet at all times as it is provided for your protection. Please make sure the information is correct and if it is not, notify your nurse.

Discharge planning begins the day you are admitted to the hospital. Your physician, the case manager, and your nurses work as a team to plan for your discharge. If you need additional medical follow-up at home, your physician may request visiting nurses, medical equipment physical therapy, respiratory therapy, or other services. In addition to medical care, there are a number of community services available on a short-term or long-term basis that our discharge planners can arrange for you if necessary.
